Blend: Equal parts Lagrein, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot
The flagship red blend Kermesse takes a very unique approach to red wine production in Alto Adige and is one of the most bold, expressive wines made here. Kermesse translates to "an event," the coming together and gathering of many ideas into one happening - in this case, the blending of many grape varieties in one wine/idea. All the different grapes (except for the Cabernet, as it ripens a bit later) are picked and pressed on the same day, and ferment together in stainless steel tanks, followed by 18 months in new French oak barriques. Even though there was some challenging and capricious weather in 2011, the vintage far exceeded all expectations, and was fabulous for red varieties - with great aroma and character, excellent structure, and perfect tannin structure. We are releasing this vintage, now 10 years after harvest, to show how beautifully the wine has developed in the cellar. In addition to the incredible structure that the wine maintains, the intensity of fruit and freshness are still quite present. Only 500 cases of this wine were produced in 2011.
Tasting notes: Our Kermesse blend stands out with its strong, intensive purple red color and an intensive, multilayered bouquet: spicy with light, smoky tobacco notes, some pepper and chocolate, fruity with red berries, wild berries and dried figs. Powerful, yet elegant and harmonic on the palate, with well-integrated tannins, delicate toast aromas and spicy fullness, with much potential and a long finish. A wine with lots of finesse and character.
93 points, James Suckling – “A beautiful, rich red with cooked-plum and berry aromas and flavors. Full body, round tannins and a delicious finish.”
