The first wine bearing my signature on the label. A wine embodying a perfect blend of a territory and its style. A great wine, surely among the jewels contributing to the Italian wine renaissance. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc selected from the winery's finest vineyards, skilfully vinified and refined in small oak barrels guarantee a rock-solid wine, potent yet harmonious, able to mature for years.

Maurizio Zanella is a very special and personal wine for me as it is proof in the bottle of the potential for Bordeaux varietals in our region. We have been making this wine since 1988 and with each vintage, the quality and expressive nature of this wine improves as our vineyards continue to mature. It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from three vineyards in Erbusco, planted 29 years ago. Two Merlot blocks from Cazzago San Martino planted 26 years ago and one Cabernet Franc vineyard in Passirano planted 30 years ago all make up the final grape selections for this wine. The grapes that go into Maurizio Zanella are from our best sources across our vineyards.

Utilizing our Metodo Ca’ del Bosco, grapes are separated by parcel and after processing, are destemmed and gravity fed into stainless steel vats. Fermentation and maceration took 22 days with frequent gravity pump-overs to submerge the heavy grape must cap at the top of the vat. The wine is then transferred to small oak casks (70% new) to finish fermentation. Once this fermentation is completed, the wine is racked and blended for further aging in oak for approximately 12 months. The wine is then bottled using our innovative filling systems that allow the wine to be bottled without oxidative or bottle shock and without the addition of sulfites. The wine is then cellared, released only when perfectly expressive, and ready to be enjoyed.

2016 was a well-balanced vintage that was characterized by early spring and rains in May. These conditions led to slowed phenology during flowering and caused more loosely clustered bunches. As summer began, the weather turned quite hot and dry that was relieved by the rains of mid-August. These rains came at the perfect time, adding life back into the vines, helping to mature the bunches before harvest. The result of the vintage was a balanced, fresh vintage that, especially in Cabernet, gave incredible acidity and tannin structure.

Press Notes:

Note that our newest vintage is yet to be reviewed. Please find the latest review from the vintage 2015 - 91 points, James Suckling: “A spicy, fruity red with blackberries, spices and dark chocolate. Full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs some time to soften. Try after 2020.”
