Blend: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot
The grapes of Tassinaia come from 37.5 acres of vineyards with sandy, stony soil and a moderating maritime climate characterized by a long ripening season. Tassinaia is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the perfect entry point into our line of age-worthy reds. Even as a “second-selection” across the vineyards, this is a complex blend that continues to develop with time in the cellar.
2016 vintage showed signs of the increasing norm of the seasons in this area - temperatures are increasing. After a warm winter and very rainy February, bud break occurred in the last week of March. The very wet winter and early spring gave incredible nutrients to the soil and very quick and abundant vegetative growth. During the time of fruit set, temperatures cooled, resulting in a very balanced development in the vines. A drier summer gave our vines the stress needed to create the concentration we look for in our Cabernet and Merlot, but they never became overripe. The perfect ratio of sugar/acidity as we harvested led to grapes that were intense in their structure and aromatics, with great freshness. These are the pieces needed for a vintage of great fruit and for aging - overall a great vintage for this wine.
92 Points, James Suckling: "Another fresh and focused edition of this wine with red cherries, rose petals, cranberries, lemon zest, Thai basil and cedar. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a delicate, refined finish. Drink now.”
