In its 2nd vintage classified as Gran Selezione, the 2015 Il Poggio is one of our best vintages since the acclaimed 1997. After the very wet previous year, 2015 will be remembered for sunshine! Even as the winter was quite cold, interspersed spring rains gave some much needed nutrients to the vineyard. The late spring brought a beautifully abundant flowering and summer was hot during the day but very cool at night, allowing the grapes to maintain their freshness and acidity while still having very structured tannins.
In over 50 years of producing Il Poggio, we have found the best way to allow the fruit to express itself through gentle production in the cellar. As is standard for this wine, we fermented and vinified the wine in stainless steel to capture the brightness of the Sangiovese fruit. Then the wine was aged in a mixture of new, 2nd fill and older 500-liter French oak barrels before bottling. The wine, a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% of indigenous varieties Colorino and Canaiolo is then aged at least 2 years in bottle before release. What was produced was stunning fruit of very high concentration, refined but bold tannins and an elegant acidity. This is a vintage that will age gracefully in the cellar for many, many years to come.
96 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter Magazine: "First produced in 1962, Il Poggio is an iconic Chianti Classico that stands the test of time. The Bianchi family puts aside 2,000 bottles each vintage in its extensive underground tunnel for release at least 10 years later. Still nascent, the 2015 slowly divulges stunning aromas of cherry blossom, blood orange, eucalyptus, and raspberry. It starts out tight and linear then unravels expanding across the palate with ripe woodland berries underscored by slate. This will continue to deliver its complex nuances for at least a couple of decades. Drinking window 2023-2038."
