Our Sangioveto – which is the traditional name for Sangiovese – is sourced from one of our most prized vineyards, the cru of Scanni. This vineyard was planted exclusively to Sangiovese vines in 1968 and the first vintage of this wine was made in 1974. Sangioveto is the embodiment of the revolutionary nature that has always been synonymous with the history of Castello di Monsanto. Even the planting of this vineyard went against the rules of Chianti Classico, which was created in 1800 and stated that no vineyard could be planted with a different ampelography (clone) than those originally approved. The wine’s dissenting spirit has always been underlined by the decision to use Borgognotta bottles rather than the traditional Chianti shape.

2016, like 2015, was one of the most iconic vintages that we have seen here in Chianti Classico for quite some time. The winter was mild, yet very rainy, providing the needed water resources for the vineyards. The first of April were unusually warm, causing budbreak about 10 days ahead of schedule, which always creates nerves about a potential frost. Yet, the season was quite temperate until a very hot summer. Luckily this heat was met with rain at what seemed to be the perfect time, refreshing the vineyards and giving life into the vine. The harvest was fantastic in both quantity and fantastic quality – a balance that is rare to have in past vintages. Already, the 2016 vintage is showing incredible bottle development and all signs point to a vintage that will be remarkable.

Press Notes:

94 points, James Suckling: “Lots of plums and sweet tobacco with floral and walnut undertones. Full body, round and creamy tannins and a soft, succulent finish. Such a gorgeous mouth feel to this. Drinkable now, but better after 2022."
