1999 was an exceptional vintage and a great way to close out the 20th century. The spring of ’99 started with spectacular growing conditions, warm weather, and perfectly-timed rains, which led to quite the abundant flowering and eventual cluster set. We spent much of the summer going through the Il Mulino vineyard and thinning the clusters, selecting only the very best to continue development on the vine. As summer progressed, the temperatures increased to achieve great ripeness during the day, but the cool nights created a perfect balance of fruit concentration with fresh, floral aromas and great acidity. 1999 has proven to be a vintage that has seen spectacular progress in the bottle. The secondary flavors of dried herbs, refined tannins have met a fruit and acid structure that has integrated beautifully and still present. After some recent tastings, we feel that 1999 is at a wonderful place and deserving to be enjoyed now and for the next couple of years.

Press Notes:

91 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media (written for Robert Parker Wine Advocate): Monsanto’s barrique-aged 1999 Nemo “Vigneto Il Mulino” (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is another terrific effort. It presents all of the classic Cabernet notes of herbs, bell pepper and cassis but with an unmistakably Tuscan warmth which gives the wine its rich, sumptuous texture and length. Although some early tertiary notes have begun to develop in the bottle, another year or two of cellaring will help the wine come together and absorb some of its oak, after which it should drink well to age 20.”
