This is a very special wine in the denomination of Brunello di Montalcino. A single vineyard, Pianrosso was one of the first “cru” bottlings of Brunello that dates back to the famed 1990 vintage here in Montalcino. The vineyard has always been recognized as a site that deserves to be produced on its own, with a unique terroir that creates a very expressive wine. The vineyard covers 11.69 hectares and has medium grain soils of heavy marl, lending to the incredible acidity in this wine. It is fermented in both stainless steel and glass-lined concrete vats before aging for 36 months in 20-62 hl Slavonian oak barrels. It is then aged for at least 8 months in bottle, only being released when the wine is ready. This wine has consistently been a Brunello primed for long aging and the spectacular 2016 vintage is no exception, as the wine has already gained complexity and texture as it has aged.
98 points, James Suckling – “Lots going on here with black plums, ripe cherries, cedar, smoke and cocoa on the nose. Ash, chocolate, crushed walnuts and some praline. Mushrooms. This has firm, ripe tannins and a full body. Flavorful and juicy finish. Very structured. Drink after 2025.”
