This Côte-Rôtie is made in a Côte Blonde style, suggesting a certain power and elegance. It mainly comes from 30 year-old Syrah vines growing on three of the steepest parcels in Côte-Rôtie, with 5% Viognier that brings a floral note to the wine. Close to the Condrieu appellation, the soils here are mostly granite. The vinification is done in stainless steel tanks to preserve the minerality of the fruit, and then followed by an 18-month aging in oak barrels (with only 30% new).

Every vintage, this wine expresses its intrinsic savory and elegant character. The wine reveals its mineral and smoky notes, which lie alongside aromas of black fruit, black olives, and pepper, and there is always a floral dimension that softens the wine. On the palate, its firm but polished tannins carry through to the finish. There's always an immediate pleasure in drinking this wine, but it is also capable of aging for years, and time in bottle brings out the most typical expressions of the appellation.

Press Notes:

"Vernay's 2016 Cote Rotie Blonde du Seigneur has 5% Viognier and spent 18 months in 30% new oak. It's a lovely wine, brimming with perfumes of violets, roses and jasmine, plus plenty of raspberry fruit, all framed by hints of pencil shavings. It's medium to full-bodied yet with a delicately silky texture and ample freshness on the long finish." – Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate, 93 points
