This wine is a very exciting new chapter for our family’s winery with 2015 being only the second vintage ever produced. Our Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico comes from a small sub-region of Greve in Chianti known as Lamole. This area is perched in a natural amphitheatre between Volpaia to the south and our winery in Panzano to the west. To some, Lamole is a forgotten corner of Chianti Classico but it has been producing grapes since Roman times with a strong tradition of high quality wines. Lamole is one of the coolest subzones in Chianti Classico, creating a very unique and different style of wine from our vineyards in Panzano.
The Filetta vineyard has actually been in our family for many years, owned by my cousin. We finally started to produce our own wine from this vineyard in 2014. It is a 6.9-hectare plot sitting at 600 meters above sea level with very sandy soil, giving a beautiful brightness to the wine. The cool climate and elevation here create a very long growing season, allowing the grapes to mature quite steadily and consistently. Fruit from this vineyard carries incredible acidity and a more fine-grained tannic structure, giving it more of a silky texture, and the fruit profile is quite bold in cherry and berry flavors. We ferment this wine solely in concrete, then age it in oak casks for 15 months before bottling. The freshness of this 100% Sangiovese is a wonderful contrast to our traditional Chianti Classico, and can be enjoyed in its youth as well as evolve with some aging.
92 Points, James Suckling: “A floral Chianti Classico that shows fresh rose petals and stems, tulips and cranberries. The palate combines acidic flair with velvety tannins while remaining composed and vivid. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.”
