Syrah has been a grape variety that we have worked with since 1991 that each vintage produces an incredible wine that presents a delicious contrast to our Sangiovesi. In my younger years, I would travel to the Northern Rhône regions of Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage and be moved by their ability to produce world-class Syrah. This wine is an homage to those classic Syrah wines, with a Tuscan flair to it. Classified as a Colli Toscana Centrale IGT, our Syrah comes from two vineyards with southern exposure – Case Via and Pecille. We manage our parcels of Syrah with the same care and meticulous vineyard management as our Sangiovese, focusing on biodynamic farming with careful cluster selection in the vineyard to create lower yields of more concentrated, beautifully matured fruit that is harvested by hand. In the cellar, after a second selection process, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for 3 weeks, extracting the dark berry fruit flavors of the variety and the complex structure and savory, herbaceous qualities that the terroir layers onto the wine. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a mixture of Troncais and Allier French oak barrels – 50% new – for 12 months before bottling. On average, we produce only 6,000 bottles of this wine.

With this release, we wanted you to truly be able to understand and appreciate the potential for Syrah in this area, so we have gone into our cellar and put together a very small quantity of bottles from four very different vintages, so you can taste the development of the variety over time and see just how spectacular Syrah from our part of Tuscany can be.

Press Notes:

93 Points, Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: “The 2003 Syrah Case Via, an opaque ruby, exhibits an unmistakable Syrah nose, with stunning sensations of black pepper, blueberry liqueur, earthiness, graphite and pain grillé that flow onto the palate with an attractive juiciness. It offers superb concentration- without any sense of heaviness- in a full-bodied, sumptuous style. This highly pleasurable Syrah should drink well to age 18, perhaps beyond.”
