2017 was quite a challenging year in the vineyard. Winter was already very dry with higher than average temperatures, which led to early bud-break on all of our vines. This was unfortunately followed by four sleepless nights of frosts in late April - leading to an eventual yield reduction of 30-40% in our vineyards. The remainder of the growing season was dry and hot, creating severe stress on the plants. Fortunately for us, the Caberlot variety is very resistant and vigorous and was able to manage the extreme growing conditions. Our respectful agronomic practices, organic together with inspiration from biodynamic viticulture, were also a contributing factor. Finally, some welcome rains arrived at the beginning of September, and soon after it was possible to start the harvest. This was a huge relief to us, the vineyards, and the entirety of Tuscany, which had suffered and been deemed the Deserto Toscano (“Tuscan desert”).
The start of the harvest was brought forward to September 10th, the earliest ever, and this allowed the grapes to preserve acidity and aromas. The production of IL CABERLOT was, due to these factors, quite limited, while more CARNASCIALE, our second wine, was bottled in this vintage. The 2017 IL CABERLOT, therefore, reflects the vintage with flavors that are more concentrated than usual, but still have a great balance. The notes on the nose are rather reminiscent of ripe berries at this early stage, while the classic notes of white pepper, eucalyptus, and spice are (for the moment) a little less present. With vibrant acidity, this vintage will age well, and the signature aromatics will most certainly start to come forward after a few years in the bottle.
“The 2017 Il Caberlot (Magnum) is so impressive. More than anything else, I am struck by how elegant and refined it is, especially for a year that was so warm and dry. Sweet red cherry, raspberry jam, espresso, wild flowers, mint and dried herbs all grace the 2017, a wine of simply extraordinary beauty. Il Caberlot has previously been a wine of impact. The 2017 offers plenty of richness, but is also much more finessed than previous editions." – 97 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
