Wines from this site were made specifically for the Abbey’s choirmasters. Herrenberg is a very special site that offers a great contrast to the more well-known Abtsberg. A portion of the 19-hectare Herrenberg site abuts Abtsberg and shares many of its characteristics, including soil composition and orientation. Toward the rear of the vineyard, however, the site is ringed by the Grüneberg forest and tends to be much cooler and less steep. Devonian slate is the predominant soil here, despite the soil’s reddish hue.

In the past, wines from Herrenberg were often considered the “little brother” to bottlings from Abtsberg. Yet as climatic conditions have shifted in recent years, Rieslings from Herrenberg have achieved a quality and prestige that rivals that of its eastern neighbor.

Wines from the Herrenberg show fruit and body early in their lives, but also possess extraordinary aging potential. They show a pronounced spicy character and tend to open up more quickly.

Press Notes:

95 points, Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com – “Although this is properly dry, it smells like fresh mirabelles and ripe redcurrants. At once sleek, concentrated and creamy with gentle tannins supporting the long, very filigree finish. Drink or hold.”
