Our Barolo Serralunga comes from three different estate vineyards throughout the village, including the top crus of Serra and San Bernardo. This blend of three very distinct parcels gives an incredible view into the balance and elegance that this village can bring to the Nebbiolo grape. All of these vineyards have somewhat of an eastern exposure, giving maximum ripeness potential from different aspects. The vineyards sit between 340-420 meters in a mixture of soil types that range from deep clay to calcareous. These unique parcels bring a layered texture to the final wine that truly showcases the style of Serralunga.
After a rigorous grape selection that occurs at least 3 times over a 45-day span in the vineyard, the grapes are manually harvested and sorted again in the cellar. We execute a slow, temperature-controlled 25-day maceration before the wine is aged 30 months in large oak botti.
The 2016 vintage will certainly be remembered as one of the longest vintages in recent years. Mild temperatures in January and early February started the activity of the vine quite early. This transitioned to a very cold, wet early spring which gave a lot of nutrients and ability for the vines to recover and store water. This continued cold delayed the vegetative growth cycle and we saw very late budbreak and flowering. This gave us a good opportunity to truly focus on each vine and make sure we had the best possible set and grape formation in each vineyard. The warm summer allowed a wonderfully balanced maturation process and from late September to early October, we saw incredible results in the vineyard during harvest. The fruit of this vintage showed to be quite elegant and balanced, while not overly concentrated. This led to exceptionally beautiful wines that are enjoyable early and will have great development for the next decade.
The 2016 vintage is yet to be reviewed. This vintage has a stunning ruby red color with bright orange reflexes that shine through the glass. 2016 is quite floral with a gentle bouquet of roses, violets, very ripe red fruits and baking spices. The palate is classic Serralunga, with a soft elegance that is approachable now with the balance of stunning acidity and structure for potential cellaring for many years to come.
