Literally translated to “The Dream”, this wine was created as an homage to the passion and innovation of our founder – Giancarlo Travaglini. This rare Nebbiolo is produced in an appassimento style that is similar to that of the famed Amarone from the Veneto. We are the only producer of this style of wine in Alto Piemonte and the expression is one of the most distinctive in the region.

'Il Sogno' is 100% Nebbiolo from our estate vineyards, but due to the method of production, it may not be classified as a Gattinara wine. We select specific plots to produce this wine and harvest it somewhat earlier to capture the natural acidity of Nebbiolo. After being hand-harvested and sorted in the winery, the grapes are dried for 100 days in a naturally-ventilated storage area. After 50% of the water in the grapes evaporates, they are brought to the cellar to begin fermentation in stainless steel for 25-30 days. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged in old Slavonian oak barrels for at least 40 months. With each vintage, a small portion is aged in barrique to add further texture and intensity to the final wine.

2016 was a spectacular year across all of Piemonte and particularly apt for production of this very special wine. The growing season for Nebbiolo started earlier than most vintages, with a warmer spring. The summer started somewhat late after an unusual cold period, which allowed the vines to rest and store the necessary energy to work through the intense heat of August and September. This resulted in beautiful clusters that were high in acidity and balanced concentration. 2016 was a great vintage for this wine that highlights the intense aromatic profile of this appassimento style Nebbiolo. The harmony between intense red fruits, minerality and firm structure all give a rich flavor in its youth and all of the elements for further cellaring for at least 10 years.

Press Notes:

The 2016 vintage has not been released nor reviewed. Please find the latest vintage review – 2015. “With founder Giancarlo Travaglini's signature on the front label, the Travaglini 2015 Il Sogno ("the dream") is made with fruit that was harvested a bit early and then left to air-dry for 100 days under special conditions with controlled temperatures and ventilation. The grapes lose much of their water volume, thus concentrating the sugars (alcohol) and flavors. That extra intensity and boldness obtained by the appassimento process is immediately evident, and this wine certainly stands out among the more delicate and nuanced wines made by the Travaglini family. Like the Gattinara wines from Travaglini, this wine is also packaged in the estate's trademarked bottle. What you get here is power and bold intensity (with a relatively contained 15.5% alcohol content) that pushes the natural boundaries of the Nebbiolo grape. That push is even more apparent in a warm and sunny vintage like 2015. Some 4,000 cases (with six bottles each) were released.” – 94+ points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
