The wine that most represents the philosophy and quality of Marchesi Fumanelli is our Amarone Classico. 2015 was a vintage of incredibly high quality and subsequent richness in the grapes. After the heavy rains of the previous vintage, 2015 was a welcome year of optimal conditions throughout the growing season. Early rains in the spring added needed nutrients to the vines and contributed to a very healthy flowering and set. For our estate, the temperate weather of the summer helped with even ripening of each grape variety, creating balanced concentration but still maintaining freshness. As harvest approached, the very warm days and cool nights led to beautifully complex grapes with great structure and aromatics, representing one of the best vintages in the last 15 years.

Each vineyard is hand-harvested from 30-40 year-old vines across our Squarano Estate. After harvest, the grapes designated for Amarone are placed into the traditional wooden plateau for drying. Over the next 120 days, the grapes dry, gaining incredibly intense concentration in a method referred to as appassimento. Then the grapes are de-stemmed and gently pressed, extracting the very little juice remaining in each berry, for a maceration period of approximately 25 days before being aged in French oak tonneaux for a minimum of 30 months and then bottled.

Our Amarone is known for its intense garnet red color, displaying the classic Amarone red cherry and wild berry notes, balanced with more complex layers of sweet baking spices, cinnamon, pipe tobacco and chocolate. A wine of great structure that is rich, rounded, soft and velvety in the texture. Particularly in the ripe 2015 vintage, this wine is incredibly powerful and ripe in its youth, and over time will develop additional complexity as it ages gracefully in your cellar for many years.
