Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is the second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré and Moulin Riche, made from younger vines. It is also aged for 18 months in oak barrels that we’ve previously used to mature a vintage of the Grand Vin, resulting in a softer, easier-drinking wine.
The leanest of the three wines we are offering today, the 2015 Pavillon has a lovely freshness underlying its fruit, a result of the leaner, stony terroir. Although fruity and aromatic, it has a delicacy that brings an element of restraint to the wine. It drinks well now and will age nicely over the next few years.
James Suckling, 93 points: “In spite of the generous ripe fruit, this also has the cool elegance and slightly austere finish of St.-Julien. Considerable intensity without any sense of heaviness make this an impressive example of modern winemaking.”
