In 2012, our family purchased 2 ha in the Schlossberg ("castle mountain," after the adjacent historic castle) Grand Cru vineyard. We were incredibly excited to start working with this vineyard, known for producing aromatic, delicate wines. The vineyard is composed primarily of granitic soils that have a very cool microclimate which allows for even greater freshness and acidity. The first vintage we produced was in 2014.

The 2017 vintage was quite backward. The growing season started off quite warm and dry, leading to a very early bud break, but then frost arrived at the end of April and hail in July. These extreme conditions led us to focus even more on only the very best grapes in Schlossberg. The rest of the summer was hot and dry during the days, giving intense ripeness in the vineyard, but surprisingly cool nights maintained the freshness of the clusters. As harvest neared the temperatures then dropped to allow for longer hang time, becoming almost cold near the end. This is a very small vintage of limited but exceptional quality. This year’s bottling will be noted for its acidity and tension with a softer, more delicate fruit profile – which is a classic marker of the Schlossberg Grand Cru.

Press Notes:

97 Points – Cellar Selection, Anne Krebiehl MW, Wine Enthusiast: “The nose of this wine is shy but centers on tart lemon freshness. The palate adds pithy texture and an earthy tone, but leaves no doubt about its stony concentration. For now this wine is taut, tight and young, and still needs to relax. A vibrant Amalfi lemon verve on the bone-dry finish gives a glimpse of pleasure to come. Drink 2025–2045.”
